Clergy Column
Why do people make a fuss about “Special Days”?
Indeed, what is a “special day” – in your life, the children’s life,
or in church life? – and what makes it special… is it going out for a
meal, having visitors come to see you, doing well at your work, or
receiving a present whether by post or personally?
Jesus was a sociable man, usually having a word of comfort or
practical advice for his friends and those who shared their problems
with him – they may have been disciples or neighbours and meeting Jesus
made the day special… for him as well as them.
Today’s Gospel reading puts it differently: he asks his hearers to
make the meals (even banquets) they laid on open to all – even people
who are those who have had a raw deal in their health or their lives.
He wanted them to be close to him – so he could listen and be a blessing
to them. Think during your prayer time today about those we
support individually or through St Peter’s, and reflect on Jesus’ words:
“You’ll be repaid!”
May Jesus bless you all day by day, as his disciples and as your
caring friend,
Mervyn
Bible reading for Friday 3rd September, 2010
'Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?' Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, 'Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins . . . .' He said to the paralytic, 'I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.' He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, 'We have never seen anything like this!' | Mark 2:7-12 NIV®
